Coalition Poll: LA Port Residents Support Accelerated Clean Air Action Plan

The Coalition has just released a public opinion poll it commissioned to find out what people who live near the San Pedro Bay ports think about port-based air pollution. The survey asked 400 registered voters living in San Pedro, Long Beach, and Wilmington for their thoughts on air pollution and potential solutions.

According to the recent poll, 74 percent of respondents believe that port-based air pollution is a problem in their community, yet only half of them have heard of the San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan. The plan sets a goal of zero emissions by 2035, which 90 percent of the respondents support. However, 70 percent also support taking immediate steps to reduce diesel-based pollution, as proposed by the Advanced Clean Trucks Now Plan. For example, more than 80 percent of respondents support providing funding to help truck owners switch to near-zero- and zero-emission vehicles.

CEC Announces Grants for Encouraging Adoption of Near-Zero-Emission NGVs

The CEC has announced a new grant funding opportunity (GFO-17-503) for projects that address barriers to widespread adoption of near-zero-emission NGVs. The solicitation will fund natural gas–related transportation projects in three categories: systems optimization of CNG-electric hybrids to minimize emissions and maximize efficiency; advanced combustion research to reduce the emissions of heavy-duty natural gas engines; and research and development that improves the economics of on-board CNG storage.

The CEC will hold a pre-application workshop Oct. 11 in Sacramento. Applications are due by 3 p.m. on Nov. 27.

DOE Plans NGV R&D Funding

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy has released a notice of intent to issue funding for R&D of medium- to heavy-duty, on-road natural gas engine technology. The EERE’s goal is to “enable natural gas engines that can cost-effectively achieve diesel-like efficiency while meeting current and future emissions standards.” Look for the announcement this month.
